​​​​​​Artificial Intelligence (AI) has the potential to make education more accessible, effective and inclusive. It enables the personalisation of learning pathways, offers data-driven insights into learning progress, optimises teaching methods and supports teachers by automating administrative tasks. But can AI systems really be used without reservation, and do they enable the personalised learning experience we have always wanted?

What about the sensitive issue of data protection!? Are the systems truly free from algorithmic bias and therefore non-discriminatory, for example, towards children from migrant backgrounds? Have the fears raised since the launch of ChatGPT 1.5 years ago now been borne out!? What has been the experience so far!? How must our examination culture change if ChatGPT is now increasingly the author of essays and dissertations!? And are our school and university students even losing the ability to learn!?

These and other questions will be discussed at the joint event organised by the Landeszentrale für politische Bildung (LpB); the non-profit association Algoright e.V. for interdisciplinary science communication for responsible digitalisation; and CERTAIN Centre for European Research in Trusted AI at the German Research Centre for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI).

The three-hour event offers an opportunity to learn about, discuss and explore the role of artificial intelligence in school and higher education. Light refreshments and drinks will be provided!

The event is aimed at the interested public, as well as education experts, education journalists, AI researchers, policy-makers, teachers, and school and university students.

Programme:

• Keynote speech: “AI in education …” by Niels Pinkwart (HU Berlin)
  The opening address will outline the diverse perspectives on the integration of AI into school education. Topics will include the impact of AI on examinations, teaching practice, task setting, and the skills required of teachers and pupils.

• Hands-on session: “AI tools in practice”
  This interactive workshop offers participants the opportunity to gain practical experience with AI-based educational tools. Participants can experiment with various AI tools to explore their impact on teaching and learning.

• Panel discussion: “AI in education – What policy decisions lie ahead?”
  The panel discussion will focus on the policy aspects of integrating AI into schools and higher education institutions. It will explore which policy decisions are necessary to ensure the effective and ethical use of AI in education.
